We have both found ourselves engaged in a long-time love affair with cocktails. Our infatuation with libations increased as we moved from sitting at the bar to standing behind the bar mixing and creating.
Our first creation came four years ago in the simple form of a vodka-based martini called “The Lady Catherine.” While many of our recipes still rely on the simplicity of pairing quality ingredients, we have also branched out and begun experimenting with many types of infusions, simple syrups, obscure liqueurs, and the rare and strange. (If you ask nicely, we may share our success stories of turkey gravy and meat shooters.)
Refined and adventurous palates mean that we are often out doing what we do best . . . sampling, tasting, reviewing, and commenting. “Research” nights have taken us all over the city testing new hot spots, quizzing Atlanta mixologists, sampling new ingredients, and enjoying the fruits of a talented bartender’s labors.
In November of 2010, the Our Libatious Nature blog site was launched. For nearly a year we had discussed the need for a site that would provide information on handcrafted cocktails and where one could go in Atlanta to enjoy them. Our research notes on places for us to visit became too valuable not to share with others.
The OLN bar is referred to lovingly as “the lab,” and is where we spend many hours taste-testing old pre-prohibition recipes and creating new libations of our own. It is an extensive collection of the rare, the cherished, the expensive, the cheap guilty pleasures, the must-haves, the “what in the hell were we thinking when we bought that,” and the comfort liqueurs.
Our Libatious Nature is a site dedicated to the exploration and enjoyment of hand-crafted cocktails. Our desire is to provide others who love classic cocktails with information on local hot spots for mixology around Atlanta, interviews with local mixologists, recipes on classics and our takes on classics, the history behind popular cocktails, some new creations of our own, cocktail resources, and some rambling thoughts on cocktails in general.
