We’re baaaaack! And, we brought a book.

Readers of this blog know we have been engaged in a long-time love affair with cocktails. Our romance with all things cocktail took an unexpected turn recently when worlds collided with our Celtic heritage.

About a year ago, the folks over at Scotpress put out a request for Scottish-based cocktail recipes and a mutual friend put them in touch with us. What started as a submission of a few recipes and thoughts – as if we’ve ever only had a few –  developed into a full book of recipes, ingredient exploration, and cocktail history.

With utmost joy, we are thrilled to present the results of our lifetime affairs, A {Not So} Wee Dram — An Exploration of Scottish Cocktails.

 

In the book, we present all you need to know to become an accomplished bartender and Scottish cocktail aficionado, using the full range of Scotland’s wealth of alcoholic beverages. The first section of the book gives you a firm grounding in mixology and in the various Scottish liquors you will be using: Scotch whisky (of course!), Drambuie, Atholl Brose, gin, various Scottish liqueurs, claret, and Scottish ales.

Section two discusses classic cocktails. Those drinks which either pre-date Prohibition or hail from the years just following it including the Rob Roy and the Rusty Nail, as well as some lesser-known treats.

Section three comes into the modern age with such cocktails as the Warm Woolly Sheep and the Flying Scotsman.

Section four is for the adventurous in spirit and our pride and joy. For these recipes, we went into “the lab” to create a selection of new and unusual drinks such as Fires in the Gloaming, Outlander’s Kiss, and the truly amazing (and just a little alarming) Irn Bru McMargarita!
